I enjoyed the heck out of this book. It's fun, adventurous, and silly (in all the right ways). Altbacker is such a great writer, that the words move at a rapid clip, never halting or feeling labored. The characters are well drawn and you quickly feel for Andy and his unusual predicament. I liken it to a great 80's movie that makes you feel happy and nostalgic at the same time. Seriously, give it a read - you're going to love it. LOVE IT!
I've enjoyed Mr. Altbacker's stellar work in the world of animation so when the opportunity presented itself to experience more by him I was delighted. Handy Andy is a fun filled adventure as our hero's "never say quit" attitude and good nature saves the day. Mr. Altbacker knows his craft and he does a wonderful job of making Andy someone young readers can find inspiration in while enjoying the never overplayed humor and adventurous science fiction nature of the book. I'm hoping this is only the first of Andy's adventures and readers will find this book as one that's worth adding to their "must read" list! Great fun for the young....and the young at heart!
When I was 10, I read a bunch of these science fiction/humor type kids books by Bruce Coville, Louis Sachar, James Howe and others. Now I'm an adult with a child of my own, and I found this book to be a delightful nostalgic stroll in the vein of that classic genre. It felt like the book was intended for readers like me that used to stay up at night reading under a bed with a flashlight. I'm giving it five stars because it goes above and beyond its intended genre. EJ Altbacker has a finely tuned comedic voice and ability to generate humor in unexpected places. The characters are fun and the dialogue made me laugh, but it goes beyond that. There's this subtle "wink and nod" quality in Altbacker's prose, reminiscent of Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams, that makes this book a true gem. Every page has at least one good laugh, or two, or twenty seven. I know Altbacker has written for other properties, but his voice in this book feels uniquely fresh. Highly recommended.
EJ Altbatcker does it again! I loved Shark Wars and now Handy Andy Saves the World shines even brighter! A hilarious and charming story that all kids will love... especially those who have read Scary School! Don't miss this amazing book, that's sure to become a children's lit classic.
Light hearted and entertaining this book was a rare treat. This was a fast paced story I did not want to put down.
My three boys (ages 10, 6, and 4) really loved the Shark Wars series so I thought they might enjoy his next book as well. We were not disappointed. Mr Altbacker's witty and captivating writing really drew my kids in and they enjoyed it immensely. We can't wait for the next one!
Handy Andy Saves the World is a funny adventure tale. Wonderfully descriptive language draws us in. Andy is an endearing fixit man who grapples with the local bully and uses his skills to engage with alien visitors. Andy reminds us that perseverance, a good heart and some luck can help to guide us through all sorts of challenges. We're cheering for Andy the whole way through. It is easy to see why the author has found success with several animated TV shows and a children's book series. Handy Andy's adventures would be fun to see play out in a kids cartoon some day!
