Louis Tracy (1863 - 1928) was a British journalist, and prolific writer of fiction. He used the pseudonyms Gordon Holmes and Robert Fraser, which were at times shared with M. P. Shiel, a collaborator from the start of the twentieth century.
He was born in Liverpool to a well-to-do middle-class family. At first he was educated at home and then at the French Seminary at Douai. Around 1884 he became a reporter for a local paper - 'The Northern Echo' at Darlington, circulating in parts of Durham and North Yorkshire]; later he worked for papers in Cardiff and Allahabad. During 1892-1894 he was closely associated with Arthur Harmsworth, in 'The Sun' and 'The Evening News and Post' (fontWikipedia)

I wasn't sure I would like this book. I definitely did not want a romance and wasn't sure I would like the adventure type story since I wanted a mystery. It turned out to be a very engaging story about a man's attempt to escape a corrupt regime in a South American country. He has many adventures that certainly keep the reader turning pages. Louis Tracy is a very good author and did not disappoint this time. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys early twentieth century novels. It is a good plot without excessive verbose details. It moves at a quick pace, and I didn't want to put the book down.Product details

His Unknown Wife edition by Louis Tracy Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Interesting, clean, pleasant saga with a bit of surprise.
Sea and survival adventure. Sequence of events a little too predictable, though for enough suspense.
.
I thoroughly enjoyed this well-written tale of international intrigue, shipwreck and adventure. Tracy takes the reader into the wild, primitive lands of South America with interesting characters and vivid scenery. It's a fun and exciting journey featuring a hero who makes you want to cheer.
Plot is believable and engaging. It left me wanting more.
The editing/transcription was a little weak in spots, but not enough to be too distracting.
This book has the singularly most exciting first chapter I've ever read. Because I don't like spoilers, though, I can't even describe it, or even the highly detailed incident that follows. Suffice it to say, Louis Tracy had a wealth of knowledge about survival on many different planes.
I don't know if these were penny potboilers, or the early 20th century equivalent of Harlequins, but his books are so much fun to read. I am just hooked on Louis Tracy.
Not a long read, but a thrilling one. I would really, really recommend this book.
I admit when I chose this book to read, my decision was based on the title. I was expecting a romance of some sort. It is an adventure story. American Alec Maseden owns a ranch in the Republic of San Juan. There is a military coup and Maseden is captured, tried, found guilty and sentenced to death by firing squad. All in one night. 45 minutes before his execution, Maseden is told a lady wants to marry him. He thinks, why not?
The details in this book are amazing. I felt certain I was reading about the history of San Juan. It seems like the author must have been a sailor to know that much about ships. Where would the author gain his knowledge of wildlife along the shore of South America? This is a wonderful tale, and I liked how we were kept in suspense as to who he married. - posted by Poore Richard's wife
I downloaded this book because I liked the title and thought it was a romance book. I began to read it and was hooked immediately! I usually don't read action/adventure books, but I couldn't put this one down! To choose another book of a similar subject matter I would choose "The Count of Monte Christo" where there is a definite building and intrigue of a relationship, but the main plot of the story is action. This is a much easier and more enjoyable read for a native English speaking reader though.
It is a book I would feel comfortable recommending to teens, but adults would probably enjoy it more.
The most difficult part of the book for me was keeping track of the time-frame. I wasn't sure about when the book was set, or the technology available. The book was published in 1916, and it seems very contemporary to that time. I did a little research into automobiles and ships of the time for some frame of reference and that helped. I also made my own book-cover to keep in mind the time period.
I would rate this book as a mild PG for the intensity and violence. It was probably pretty racy for 1916.
