"eden Hudson's writing is engaging and smart. She creates a world you fall into. Then you break your fingernails trying to crawl back out."
—Giulia Torre, author of Wolfe Island

You got to pay to play…

At just twenty-two years old, Shannon Colter has everything she’s ever wanted. She’s an international rock star, her guitar playing is better than it’s ever been, and she never has to worry about going hungry again.

But behind the scenes, Shannon’s world is falling apart. Her bandmates hate her, the music she used to love is driving her insane, the only escape she can find from the noise is sex, and the messiest breakup of her pre-rock-star life, Danny Whitney, just blew into town.

To top it all off, the deal Shannon made with the devil just came due. Now the forces of Hell have been unleashed against her with one objective Destroy.

Hell wants her, but he wants her more...

Danny Whitney is the quintessential good boy. He reads his Bible and prays. He works hard and gets good grades. He's just five weeks and one senior thesis from graduating seminary at the top of his class.

But there was always something about Shannon that drove Danny a little bit crazy. Something that made him want to sacrifice everything good, just for her. Even now, five years after she wrecked his heart, he would do anything to keep her safe.

Anything.

This is one of my favorite series' ever, and I'm not even sorta kidding. While this wasn't a direct sequel to Halo Bound, it does serve to fill in some interesting backstory for Colt and Tough's parents.
Whereas Halo Bound is more of a fast-paced struggle between good and evil and completely full of moral ambiguity, this is a paranormal romance. It takes place many years before the events of Halo Bound and tells the story of Danny and Shannon. She's one break short from frying all her wires and he's lost in life. They were together once upon a time during high school, but broke up for various reasons. Now that they've run into each other again an old fire has been rekindled. Most importantly, they have to save each other.

This was so different from Halo Bound. It's definitely toned down and not as dark. The romance is the main focus. Which means that Danny and Shannon are the main focus. They get a ton of fleshing out and feel like very realistic people. It's all the side character's that suffer for it. I left the book not really caring or knowing much about the supporting actors in this story. Which is the reason the book was taken down from five stars.

Other than that, this book was fantastic. I liked the way that heartbreak and mental illness are dealt with in this book, and the whole series, really. Shannon has something very bad going on with her, and while it's never straight out diagnosed, one knows it's not normal or healthy. The fact that she's not treated as less of a person for it is great, and the fact that you, the reader, feel a bit insane while reading from her perspective is amazing. Like with Halo Bound, whenever I read this book I felt completely transported into the mind of the narrators.

The story isn't as complex as the main series, which was fine by me, because it was still as entertaining. It also had a rather open-ended ending that makes me wonder if there will every be a follow up? I wouldn't mind returning to see where these two are at a different point in their life, though it's not super important.

The climax of this one was as beautiful and heart-racing as Halo Bound. I couldn't put it down and was left thinking about it for several days after finishing. If that's not the mark of a fantastic author, I don't know what is.

If you haven't started this series yet, what's wrong with you?! It's one of the best things you'll read this year, I promise. You can either start with this prequel (click here for the goodreads link to add to your shelf) or with the first book, Halo Bound (which, last I checked, was free on the Kindle store).

Lion Den Redneck Apocalypse edition by eden Hudson Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

eden Hudson's books get dark early and blacken from there, but there's always some spark of hope, too - some sense of redemption that might just be able to vanquish the shadows.

I raced through the second half of this book in a single sitting, and after I was done I had a hard time getting to sleep. I kept thinking about it, tumbling this story and these characters around in my mind - especially Shannon.

Like the book this is a prequel to, HALO BOUND, this one got me under its spell around the halfway point. The web of details dictating the characters' behaviors snaps into focus, revealing intricate emotional depths that I didn't see coming. What seems like sheer angst early on becomes something more elaborate as the backstory fills out, something melancholy and tormented and ashamed.

Emotionally, it's not all bleak, though. There's hope, too. Seeing how dark things can get gives the light meaning. This story balances the two well.

Shannon and Danny are great characters. Shannon in particular is one I'll remember a long time. She's a rock star, introduced as an anti-hero, a rebel, a charismatic disaster. She's entertaining and self pitying and quirky and in some way borders on unlikable at times in the early going. But the way the details of her past tie into her feelings and motivations in the present day really round out the character in an awesome way. Just like that, she makes sense entirely. I can't imagine someone reading this and not having great affection for this character by the end.

Danny is a seminary student. He's on the straight laced and square side compared to Shannon, though he does slay demons on the side. His arc also reveals emotional depths through vivid details and memories. While Shannon is sort of the star of the show, at least to me, Danny is a good guy and easy to root for.

And right when the story gets you fully on the hook emotionally, the plot accelerates like crazy, and you won't be able to put it down. Just try it. It definitely got my adrenalin pumping. I think that's why I couldn't sleep.

At its best, fiction makes us look at the tangle of conflicts in our hearts with some new perspective, some new clarity. Hudson's books make me do that. In both small moments and big ones, she somehow pushes buttons that make me feel strange things and then analyze those feelings, and I want more of that.
